High Island Artwork – “Dear Sea” Video Introduction
“Dear Sea” is designed by a local product designer, Niko Leung, who initiated research on Hong Kong soil. The artwork revived the Sha Kiu village office for Sai Kung Hoi Arts Festival, turning it into a community space where villagers can truly enjoy. “Dear Sea” puts on a new skin for the village office, the wall resembles the fish net pattern while symbolically taking the tile-making process as the “brick by brick” journey of villagers coming ashore.

Kau Sai Chau Artwork – “Weaving Waves Pavilion” Video Introduction
"Weaving Waves Pavilion" was designed by Su Chang, an adjunct assistant professor of the Faculty of Architecture in HKU, Sherman Lam and Andie Lam, two graduates from the same Faculty. The design was inspired by Kau Sai’s fishing history, drawing attention from the daily construction of the fishermen’s community, which also put specific emphasis on the landscape characteristics of the site, which are backed by the mountain, facing the wind, and looking at the sea, with a unique rocky beach terrain.

Yim Tin Tsai Artwork – “Island Log” Video Introduction
“Island Log” is a wooden pavilion made in collaboration with a woodcraft artist group MADE and an ink artist Sim Shum. The pavilion is constructed in front of the saltpan, providing a space for visitors to rest and to read stories. The artwork records the stories of the island residents and the landscape of saltpan, while also encouraging visitors to freely create their own stories about the landscape as they gaze outward from the pavilion. This allows viewers to have their own interpretations while reading the stories of the island residents.

High Island Artwork – “One-Sixth Land” Video Introduction
“One-Sixth Land” is an artwork designed by Sammy Chow and Ceci Yiu. The artwork was designed based on the forms of hexagonal columns and the colours of the Tin Hau Temple. Portions of the pillars feature ropes that capture the vertical patterns, while others act as mirrors, reflecting the natural view of the sea and the landscape. The artwork offers visitors a sense of the vast beauty of High Island from afar, then allows them to explore it up close.

Kau Sai Chau Artwork – “Our Celestial Commons” Video Introduction
Village Commoning is a research initiative established since 2021 at the University of Hong Kong. The artwork located at Kau Sai Chau is co-created with villagers, and the “sky” come together to create a canopy that is comprised of the sky’s natural colours and patterns collected from villagers. Piece by piece, story by story, all of the elements intertwine, embodying the sentiments of villagers.

Yim Tin Tsai Artwork – “The Glazed Island” Video Introduction
“The Glazed Island” is an art installation made with recycled glasses, designed by three architects, Keith Chan, Stephen Ip and Arnold Wong. The form of the installation also echoes with the geography of Yim Tin Tsai, forming a design language that tells the story of Yim Tin Tsai in a subtle way, and creating a unique place for people to sit, rest, and have picnics and chats.

High Island Artwork – “Rhythmic LANE” Video Introduction
Similar to how the school serves as a meeting place for people from different villages, sound and symbol bear the same ability to unite people of different backgrounds and origins. In Leung Shuen Wan, various kinds of sound serve as signals, such as the sound indicating the departure for fishing and the sound of school bell calling people together. Napp Studio & Architects joined hands with Fragrant Village to create an interactive art installation that revealed the stories of the villagers studied at the Leung Shuen Bay Public School.

Kau Sai Chau Artwork – “Sails” Video Introduction
“Sails” is a large-scale bamboo weaving art installation created by Hong Kong bamboo artist Inkgo Lam, which combines more than a dozen kinds of bamboo weaving craftsmanship. Each of the three traditional Chinese sails has its own name, which are the head sail (front), the big sail (middle), and the third sail (back). They describe the three mood changes at different stages of a fishing trip: going out to sea, returning to the voyage, and returning home. These parts of a long excursion are interlocking and form a cycle.

Sai Kung Town Artwork – “Joy Again, Stories: Dashing Through Weather’s Lapse” Video Introduction
"Joy Again, Stories: Dashing Through Weather's Lapse" intended to showcase installations and twelve storylines from the islands of Sai Kung Hoi, the piece aims to weave the tales of Sai Kung’s islanders and residents, inviting the audience to journey between the present weather and the islanders’ reminiscences and recollections.

Yim Tin Tsai Artwork – “Stone and Shrine Circle” Video Introduction
“Stone and Shrine Circle” is an outdoor artwork created by artists Match Chen and Wich Chau, which combines natural giant stones and environmental installations to symbolise the salt of Yim Tin Tsai and the biblical rock. The artwork aims to connect people to the heavens while offering breath-taking views of the Sai Kung Hoi and sky.

Sai Kung Hoi Arts Festival 2023 Officially Opened
Sai Kung Hoi Arts Festival 2023 is officially opened today (15 November)! From now until 14 January 2024, you are welcome to visit Sai Kung Town, Yim Tin Tsai, Sharp Island, Kau Sai Chau and High Island to visit the 18 artworks featuring unique features of the isles, and join over 90 amazing programmes and over 400 guided tours! You are also welcome to explore the islands at your own pace and try out the unique island hopping experience. Joy Again, Isle!
