“Soul of Hoi” is a multidisciplinary performance that celebrates the local Hakka fishing culture of High Island and its native flora.

The sculpture is both a dance partner and a lens through which audiences may interpret the performance. The quarter rest reminds the audience to take a moment’s respite within life’s constant hustle. The copper tubes represent High Island’s native flora, as well as the strength and ever-changing form of ocean waves.

The dance mimics swimming fish and a raft while taking inspiration from ocean waves and dragon boats. The dancer’s movements are interactable – that is, the dancers improvise their movements based on those made by audience members themselves.

The ocarina and percussion players will play 4 songs: “Song of Yearning”, “The Girl Yonder”, “Big Fish”, and “Song of the Homebound Fishermen”. The composition of the songs and instruments project the imagery of birds, cicadas, and crashing sea waves, instilling a sense of peace – a momentary getaway into nature’s open arms.
