"It's Not Here, It's Over Here" — Audio Introduction by the Artist

A proposal for a group of people in motion, where the awareness of another becomes more and more indispensable.

The installation
The world is filled with things we often overlook as insignificant or mundane. “It’s Not Here, It’s Over Here” explores the experience that emerges from the accumulation of these seemingly trivial elements. This installation is composed of a 4-kilometre-long sisal string. The accumulation of a simple material transforms it into a new dimension, demonstrating how a basic substance can transcend its physical form.

Here, accumulation is not just a physical aggregation; it becomes an experience that transforms time and space. Accumulation delves into how quantitative changes from the act of accumulation can lead to qualitative transformation. The string, initially an ordinary material, becomes something new through continuous repetition and accumulation. The power of accumulation in this process is a testament to the convergence of time and patience, revealing how accumulation can transcend physical changes and evolve into a mental and sensory experience.

This piece reveals the potential for the ordinary to transcend its nature when accumulated, suggesting a shift in how we perceive the mundane through the lens of repetition and persistence.

The Performance
Can the emptiness we make create an ‘us’? The only way that I could see if the streets had been opened was through the movement of the people directly in front of me. When the people started running, a small space appeared around me. I wanted to fill that space. The street had been blocked just around the bend. It was a brief moment. I still believe that there is something surpasses the sum of individuals. Going towards something unknown is not a problem. What’s important is to experience this sensation of together. That’s where it all begins.

“It’s Not Here, It’s Over Here” has played over ninety times in numerous festivals in France and internationally (14 countries), and has received support for its tours from ONDA, the French Institute, the French consulate of New-York, Korean Art Management Service, KOFICE.

Artists Introduction

Galmae

Since 2017, under the direction of Juhyung LEE (이주형), Galmae has been offering an original perspective on performance art in public spaces. The two main creations, “It’s Not Here, It’s Over Here” and “To the extent possible,” stand out for their prominent use of scenography, lighting, and visual elements. These performances, devoid of text, leave much room for the imagination of the spectators. Juhyung places great emphasis on allowing each spectator to freely interpret the performances, stressing that the interpretation belongs to the audience, not the artist. Galmae’s international collaborations further broaden the impact of their work, attracting a diverse and global audience.
